Our National Convener, Cailyn McMahon, has been involved in the SNP since 2016 and has served on the YSI NEC for four years now. First as Mid Scotland and Fife Regional Convener, and then as National Equalities Officer, next as National Women’s Officer, and now as National Convener.
Cailyn has played a key role in shaping our organisation over this time, particularly in our policy campaigns. She played a part in the team that took the TIE campaign to Party Conference, and worked on our ‘Age of Military Recruitment’ motion, ‘Overhaul of Consent Education’, ‘A Whole School Approach to Mental Health’, as well as having spearheaded the YSI’s campaign to support Clara Ponsati and Catalonia, alongside Aamer Anwar- just to name a few. Before she found politics, Cailyn was a Scottish national level swimmer, despite being born in South Africa. She grew up all around the world from Germany to Dubai, and only moved to Scotland in 2014.
Cailyn’s main aims for this year, as our convener, is to ensure that every member of our organisation is supported and empowered so that they have the best possible experience in politics, and are equipped to be at the forefront of our movement and the Yes campaign. To do this, she will oversee monthly events and campaign days to also ensure that the YSI is always open and accessible to every young person that wishes to be a part of the fight for independence and creating a socially just country.
